Momentous and the Honnold Foundation

Momentous is Teaming Up with the Honnold Foundation

For every bottle of Momentous plant-based protein sold from now to May 1st, Momentous will donate six dollars to the Honnold Foundation. This is the equivalent to one solar lantern.

One solar lantern donated to a household in Malawi and Zambia will allow adults to cook, children to do their homework, and families to gather after sundown, free from the dangers of kerosene-burning lamps.

Alex has already brought light into so many lives. We’re proud to partner with him in positively impacting even more.

UPDATE: BIG NEWS!

We are very pleased to announce that all donations to the Honnold Foundation are now being matched. A friend of Momentous and Alex Honnold has stepped in and upped the ante.

For every bottle of Momentous plant-based protein sold through May 1st, we will now donate $12 to the Honnold Foundation, equivalent to two solar lanterns.

There’s so much strength in vulnerability. You have to be okay with, ‘I'm not okay.’ You have to be okay with, ‘I'm not perfect.’ People trusted that first, and then they trusted the man and that what I was telling them to do would help them. You can’t provoke change without trust.

MORE ON THE HONNOLD FOUNDATION AND MOMENTOUS

Alex Honnold doesn’t do half-measures. When you’re precariously perched on a sheer granite wall 3,000 feet above the floor of Yosemite National Park, lack of commitment is simply not an option. It isn’t just during death-defying climbs like his mind-boggling ropeless ascent of El Capitan’s Freerider route that Alex moves with preternatural speed and vigor. His pursuit of the “warrior’s way,” as he calls it in the Jimmy Chin/Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi film Free Solo that chronicles the climb and claimed the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, extends to every area of his life. How else could one explain the fact that Alex was back dangling from his van-mounted hangboard mere hours after completing what The New York Times hailed as “one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever”?

Such dedication transcends his pioneering climbs, grueling training sessions, and the kind of “off-days” that would leave most mountain athletes as quivering wrecks (like the 65 free-soloed pitches of Yosemite’s Lower, Middle, and Upper Cathedral he casually reeled off in the run-up to the Freerider ascent). It also extends to Alex’s non-profit work, which, though he doesn’t like to draw attention to it due to his overriding humility, sees him give away a third of his income each year. Such generosity led to Alex establishing the Honnold Foundation with Boulder-based lawyer and climber Maury Birdwell, in 2012.

As the two friends were talking while coming home from a climbing trip, they started brainstorming ways to improve the lives of people living in poverty while also reducing environmental impact. The solution? A not-for-profit organization that would serve the needs of others and help safeguard the future of the planet.

Per its website, “The Honnold Foundation envisions a world where all people have equal access to opportunity and live in balance with the environment.” To make this mission statement a reality, the foundation funds solar power initiatives that are helping to tackle global energy inequality through environmentally sound means. Projects to date include supporting Northern Navajo Solar Entrepreneurs, furthering the efforts of SolarAid to replace costly, polluting kerosene lamps in Malawi and Zambia with solar ones, and advancing pay-as-you-go financing for solar energy systems in Ethiopia through Solar Energy Foundation.

When we first explored the possibility of bringing Alex into the Momentous family, it wasn’t just his athleticism or courage that inspired us, but also his commitment to create positive change in the world. Last year, Alex helped us develop our AbsoluteZero plant-based protein for everyday use, in keeping with his rigorous performance standards and mostly plant-focused diet.

“I've been using the product for a while and it definitely works for me,” Alex said. “I appreciate the clean, high-quality recovery products that Momentous is producing and wanted to get involved. My approach to nutrition is influenced by environmental impact – I try to think about how my food choices impact the world as much as I think about how they affect my body.”

Such consciousness is the driving force behind our new campaign to support the work of the Honnold Foundation. For every bottle of Momentous plant-based protein sold from now until May 1st, a six dollar donation will be made to purchase a solar lantern that will allow adults to cook, children to do their homework, and families to gather after sundown, free from the dangers of kerosene-burning lamps. Alex has already brought light into so many lives. We’re proud to partner with him in positively impacting even more.
